Peter Svensson of the Associated Press called
the Instinct, “an iPhone clone done right.” He notis that the Instinct
and iPhone both use a 3G network and wrap a lot of features into the
phones. Monthly costs are about the same. Both have 3 megapixel camera.
The Samsung Instinct only comes with 2 gigabytes of storage which can
be expandable with cheap MicroSDs. On-screen keyboards are both
usable. Both connect to enterprise email and Outlook. Where the
Instinct shines is that it records stills, is smaller, does picture
messaging, has haptic feedback, navigation software has turn-by-turn
directions, streaming TV service is included in monthly plan, it comes
with two batteries which are removable, music can be played on
Bluetooth headsets. It’s drawbacks are the screen has fewer pixels for
less clarity, touch screen is only one finger at a time, the Sprint
network is not always reliable, and it has fewer apps right now.
Mike Wedland in the Detroit Free Press writes, “I think the Samsung Instinct really challenges the iPhone on feature,” such features include voice search, voice commands, turn-by-turn directions, multitasking (play music while surfing the net,) and similar plans. He concludes,” the Instinct is the most impressive iPhone alternative I’ve seen. It’s not an iPhone killer. But it’s a strong competitor.”
David Pogue in the International Herald Tribune, praised the FM radio, the GPS that warns of traffic tie-ups and the included features whup the iPhone. However he notes there is no orientation sensor, Wi-Fi or slick Apple interface.
