Apple announced it sold one million iPhone 3G handsets by
Sunday, three days after its launch on Friday, July 11.

analyst Gene Munster estimated that 225,000 iPhone 3G units were sold in the US. Based on an online
inventory reports, it is estimated that Apple sold out of iPhones in 95 stores.
The are rports that because the phones had to be activated in either the Apple or AT&T stores, it overloaded servers and slowed lines. On top the hardware release the new software upgrade slowed the process even more, and leaving some upgraded iPhones not working at all, when servers overloaded.
"iPhone 3G had a stunning opening weekend," said Steve Jobs, Apple's
CEO. "It took 74 days to sell the first one million original iPhones,
so the new iPhone 3G is clearly off to a great start around the world."
