Various sources have shown internal documents revealing the launch of Verizon's new femtocell product the "Verizon Network Extender" on January 25, for $250.
It has been reportedly made by Samsung the same company that makes Sprint Airwave. When The Network Extender is hooked up to a broadband connection, it creates a CDMA cloud for Verizon coverage in areas where there may not be wireless coverage, but only a broadband connection.
It creates a 5,000 square foot area of coverage and addresses performance issues due to problems of coverage within buildings. It will work with all Verizon handsets. Up to three individual calls can be active at a one time. The Network Extender should be placed by a window, or the GPS antenna can be place outside. GPS is required to make sure the unit is in the U.S. It uses licensed airwaves therefore there is less interference than Wi-Fi. The Network Extender supports both voice and data calls.
It is not clear whether Verizon will charge an additional monthly fee for the service.
