Apple has confirmed that it has sold a total of 17 million iPhones (both the original iPhone and iPhone 3G) since the launch of the smartphone, according to Apple's vice president of iPod and iPhone product marketing, Greg Joswiak.
During the launch of Apple's iPhone 3.0 software last week, Joswiak said that the number includes 13.7 million iPhones sold in 2008 which beat Apple's target of 10 million by a wide margin.
For sales of the iPod touch and the iPhone Apple has sold 30 million iPhone OS devices.
Apple will upgrade its operating system to version 3.0 this year for free for iPhone users it includes copy/paste, MMS and and other new features. Details of the upgrade appear here. AT&T will sell non-contract versions of the iPhone for $599 and $699.
