Forbes reports that Opera plans to announce some big operator deals at CTIA
Wireless. Opera claims it is the most popular mobile web browsers has over 20 million users. Reviewers continually confirm that it is faster than many proprietary browsers.
An Opera spokesman declined to
specify the carriers, but the company traditionally works only with
large, "tier one" operators."
This changes the way Opera is making deals. Previously it worked with handset makers such as Nokia.
The article states, "Carriers can partner with Opera in two ways: by licensing its browser
technology or distributing the browser on phones it supports. Both
scenarios earn Opera money, either for the technology or for their
engineers' time."
Opera renders web pages in a more phone-friendly format. An Opera
spokesman told Forbes operators around the world are more willing to
pay for
Opera's technology because they realize the importance of the mobile
web and want to wield more control over it.
In February Opera premiered Opera Turbo which compresses bandwidth consumption. By
processing data being sent to a mobile phone or a PC by up to 80 percent, operators will be able to reduce network traffic and save on data transmissions. This helps to extend the longevity of their mobile network investments.
