Palm has just updated the webOS operating system for the Palm Pre to webOS 1.0.3. The webOS 1.0.3 update for the Palm Pre improves speed and signal strength. It also
improves syncing with Google Apps and changed the alarm clock for
weekends.
There are few details you should know before you perform the update on your Palm Pre.You will not be able to use your Palm Pre during the installation of the update. Here's how to install the webOS update on your Palm Pre.
How to Download the Update
The update may be pushed to you or you can get it via the. updates app on the Palm Pre to download it immediately, (It will take less time to download, if you are connected to Wi-Fi.)
For the OTA (Over-the-Air) update, you will get an alert stating:
"Palm webOS 1.0.3 is now available. It is about 13mb. We'll download it over the next few hours when your device is idle and a high speed network is available. You be notified when the update is ready to install.'
You are also given the option to download the update now via the "Download Now" button.
For an automatic "Over the Air" background update, the Palm Pre will wait until you are connected to a Wi-Fi connection, if you don't connect to Wi-Fi within two days, it will download the update via the 3G data network.
If the download process is interrupted for any reason, the process will automatically reconnect and complete. Updates
are not downloaded when you have a low-speed data connection or a
roaming connection, unless you have enabled data roaming.
Install the Update
Important note: your battery has be charged to at least 30% and do not install the update if you are on a phone call. You can however, use your phone while the update downloads.
After the update is downloaded you have to install it.
Installation can take up to fifteen minutes to complete. While a system update is being installed, you cannot use any part of your phone, and all wireless services are disabled. They warn, do not remove your battery while an update is being installed because you could damage the phone. The update shouldn't effect your data (contacts, emails, calendar etc.) in any way.
New Features, Glitch Fixes and Improvements in webOS 1.0.3
The alarm clock now works differently for weekends. If
you create a weekday alarm on a weekend, the alarm sounds only on
weekdays. Power performance in areas where wireless coverage is sporadic or unavailable has been enhanced.
The syncing with Google Calendar, Events, an Contacts has improved. They
have fixed the glitch that caused symbols and odd characters to net
sync with ,Google Calendar. Events
created in your Google calendar--either in Calendar on your phone or in
Google online--that contain a symbol or accented character in the event
name can now synchronize. Previously, including a symbol or accented
character in an event name prevented the event from synchronizing.
Changes made to Google events on the phone now sync with Google online
within a few minutes.The sync interval for Google events has been
decreased from every few hours to every 15 minutes.
Google contacts on the phone now syncs with Google online every 15 minutes, previously it was a few hours. This update has not added any new applications.
