Oh say can you see that netbook prices are dropping down next to nothing. Best Buy is now offering embedded a Mobile Broadband netbook "in store only" for 99 cents with a Sprint contract, $199 for AT&T/Verizon or without a contract for $389.99. A free netbook, definitely qualifies for deal of the week with such a deep discount at the beginning of the contract.
Please note that the ad says for this week only. It's for a Compaq Mini 110c-1040DX.
Engadget noted, "at $60 a month for service, you'll be spending $1,440 for two years of pain with that 1.6GHz Atom, 1GB of RAM and three-cell battery." They would prefer to use MiFi with any notebook which will supply Wi-Fi for up to five computers/devices.
The fine print says:
Instant savings require in-store activation through Best Buy on new
lines of service with 2-year agreement on each line. Requires monthly
access charge. If usage limit of 5GB/month is exceeded, you will be
charged a usage fee. Check with Carrier for details. Available anywhere
within the Broadband Access rate and coverage area. No dealers. Service
available in New Jersey. Carriers and products vary by store. Subject
to credit approval. Restrictions apply. Activation and termination fees
apply. Actual speeds may vary. Existing cell phone contract not
required. See a Customer Specialist in store for details.
Don't forget there have been many netbook users who go over on their data plan and get bills in the thousands of dollars. Also studies have shown that people aren't always satisfied with the limitations of netbook computers. NPD Group studied the confusion around notebooks versus
netbooks. Netbooks are not as powerful and can disappoint buyers.
