BusinessWeek which just launched a free BlackBerry app, published an article where three college students participated in a travel test in Atlanta to see which was more efficient, smartphones such as the BlackBerry or iPhone or a guidebook.
Shalini Ramachandran wrote an article and created a video about the test.
The contestants had to complete typical travel tasks such as getting a hotel, going to the convention center, finding a fancy impressive restaurant, walking to a building, finding a Carribean resturant, and finding a club where you don't remember the exact name.
All of the smartphone users experienced difficulties searching through information while the guidebook user relied on people and won.
The article ends with this:
"So maybe it's best not to rely on devices as a crutch, useful as they
are. When traveling to a new city, if Google Maps (heaven forbid) fails
you, it might come in handy to remember a great resource at hand: the
people around you."
