The BlackBerry Tour, which received excellent reviews, is getting off track and being returned due to trackball stickiness and unresponsiveness, notes several reports.
Nearly 50% of BlackBerry Tour smartphones that Sprint sold are being returned reported analyst David Eller at TownHall Investment Research.
"Verizon is angry about this recurring trackball problem and is telling
its retailers to expect strong support for the new Motorola phone,"
Eller wrote.
Some users have reported that they had to roll the trackball repeatedly
for it to move the cursor on the screen only a little bit.
Eller also reported that BlackBerry Tour owners were told "to clean the
trackball frequently and preferably with compressed air." When they
didn't clean the trackball it stuck more and then they would bring back their
BlackBerry Tour for repair and return it.
BlackBerry Cool reminded BlackBerry Tour users that they help fix your
BlackBerry trackball by:
1) Make sure the sensitivity settings are ideal. Often turning up your sensitivity is helpful for experienced users.
2) Replace the trackball yourself.
Sprint suggested in some reports that the return rate was no where as high as fifty per cent.
"We experienced a small percentage of early production BlackBerry Tour
smartphones with trackball issues," Mark J. Elliott, a Sprint
spokesman, wrote via e-mail. "As soon as the issue was identified, we
worked closely with our partners at RIM to resolve the problem
quickly."
"The Tour is not being returned at a high rate," Jim Gerace, a
Verizon spokesman, told IDG News'

"It has in fact one of the lowest return rates
of any device we currently sell."
Gerace told her that Verizon caught the problem with the trackball early on and only a
"small number" made it to customers and did not say how
many.
