Industry insiders revealed that Droid is not just the name for one Android handset from Verizon, but a series of smartphones.
The first Droid Android smartphone is expected to be introduced on October 28 in big press event in New York City. That day is big for Verizon because its also supposed to be when the new BlackBerry Storm 2 goes on sale. It is not clear when the release date will be for Droid for sale. The Droid clock on the Droid countdown website is now set to end on October 28.
Droid made a sneak appearance on the Motorola website and showed off his powerful iPhone-Killah specs before being taken-don. Droid will be powered by Google Android 2.0 (Eclair)j and have a huge 480-by-854 touchscreen with a sliding QWERTY keyboard, 5 megapixel camera(image stabilization, 4X digital zoom, dual LED flash, auto-focus), DVD video playback, predictive text and for business users the most coveted MS Exchange and Gmail sync. The droid also has Wi-Fi, speech recognition/voice dialing, Bluetooth, and the super-synced Facebook/Gmail/MS Exchange contacts.
