The Droid by Motorola has been well-reviewed but reviews of the camera were not so clearly positive. Why we ask? It may be because the reviewers were taking photos with a dirty lens.
There have been several camera rumors circulating about the Droid. One rumor propounds that a camera update was secretly uploaded (but not by aliens) that fixed the camera. Another rumor contends that if you wipe off the lens which shipped with a oily protective film on it, the photos will get better. Then there's an autofocus on a cycle glitch.
The easiest rumor to check was the dirty lens theory. Since, we have a review unit of a Droid by Motorola and a cloth, we tested the dirty lens fix.
The results were amazing. As you can see by the above photograph. We
took a lens cloth used for eyeglasses and wiped off the camera lens. After the lens cleanse the photos were much better. For a closer look at the
differences, you can click on the photo above for a larger image.
Getting the photos on to our computer was another issue we dealt with in an article on Sunday. The Droid has to be mounted from the notifications bar at the top of the Droid. If you are syncing files such as music or photos its a lot easier to use Media Link by Motorola software.
It has been suggested the camera issues were fixed by the lens being cleaned by putting the Droid in pockets or just by normal use.It has also been reported that the green focus lines show more clearly after the lens cleanse.
In regards to the cycle error, the Android team is apparently aware of a problem. Google's Matt Cutts left a comment on the Tech Crunch article. There is a camera bug that will be fixed.
The Android team knows about it: http://www.enga...ments/23182303/"
"There's a rounding-error bug in the camera driver's autofocus
routine (which uses a timestamp) that causes autofocus to behave poorly
on a 24.5-day cycle. That is, it'll work for 24.5 days, then have poor
performance for 24.5 days, then work again.
The 17th is the start of a new "works correctly" cycle, so the
devices will be fine for a while. A permanent fix is in the works."
