Android-Droid Apps 2Day: Google Goggles Beta Searches from Photos

goggles_landmark.jpgGoogle's Gadget Lab has released the Google Goggles app for Android 1.6. The Google Goggles Android app lets you search by taking a photo. You don't have to type your search. The Google Goggles app lets you find find out what businesses are nearby by pointing your phone at a store.

We tried to search for Google Goggles from the Droid Eris by HTC and
didn't get any results on Android Market.  However, we searched on
Google Market from the well-reviewed Droid by Motorola and it worked
fairly well.  We took a quick snapshot of an ad for Vons supermarket and the Google search showed in the top search spot "Find a Vons Store."

SunsetPlumbing.jpg.jpgTaking a photo of our editors business card which had our URL on it, showed results of some unknown avenue and the Wireless and Mobile News website. Google Goggling books also had good results, for instance we took a pic of "Sunset Basic Plumbing iIlustrated" and first up in the search was the title, then "Compare Prices on Google Product Search" and "Preview this Book on Google Book Search. The book search showed the 1983 edition.

The funniest result was when we took a photo of the Droid Eris by HTC and the results showed an iPhone!  The image that is showed like our photo was a photo of an HTC Hero from a forum review that compared it to the iPhone..  The HTC Hero is similar to the Droid Eris by HTC but has a larger protruding navigation area.  The web search, however, resulted in Apple's iPhone website. In an attempt to recreate the search, when we took another photo of the Droid Eris by HTC there were no search results.

The Google Goggles webpage admits that this is just the beginning - it's not quite perfect yet, but it works well for some things. It doesn't work well for animals or apparel.

You can turn on 'visual search
history' to view or share your pictures at any time. Turn it off to
discard them once the search is done.

Google Labs has great plans for Google Goggles, in the future, you will be
able to tell the name of plant by taking a photo of plant. A video
demonstration follows.
