Android FroYo News: HTC EVO 4G Slated for Update/Upgrade to Android 2.2 8/2

Thumbnail image for updatescreenshotEVO4GHTC.pngA leaked Sprint document suggests that Sprint will be pushing out an Over-the-Air (OTA) update to HTC EVO 4G owners to Android 2.2 (FroYo) starting tomorrow July 30 at noon CST.

Update 7/30:  The Sprint Blog post confirms the update and it has even more neat FroYo Android 2.2, features. The update will roll-out over time and should reach everyone by mid August.

Fridays are generally the day OTA updates get pushed because there is less of a data load after the work day is over. There will be announcement stating that the official push will be the week of August 1.  The test bed will client initiated on Friday afternoon, with official pushing on Tuesday, August 2.

This update for the HTC EVO 4G not only adds the great new features of FroYo but also new features to HTC Sense UI. A list of improvements follows. Apps can now be installed on the microSD card, there are more widgets, camera/camcorder improvements, search improvements and the LED flash can be used as a flashlight and for video recording. The software upgrade will be available from HTC FOTA, as well as via
3G/Wi-Fi/4G.  You can use your EVO during the download but not during
installation.

The well-reviewed HTC EVO 4G continues to sell-out. It is loaded with HTC Sense with many handy tricks, widgets, scenes, and social networking features.

Specs of the of improvements and enhancements for the Android 2.2 HTC EVO 4G update/upgrade:

  • App sharing and installation on microSD card.
  • Facebook calendar integration.
  • Led light can be used as flash light.
  • New features to Friend Stream - local search and ability to add as frined unkown users in Facebook.
  • Gallery - now supports Facebook comments.
  • email improvements -from the groups tab, you can auto-save a draft
    by tapping back key.  The ability to save email in outbox when there is
    not connection.
  • Messaging has a larger auto enlarge compose area, MMS slideshow editor and ability to send contact as a vCard via SMS.
  • New preloaded widgets - calculator, FM radio, message list, and ringtone settings.
  • Camera/Camcorder - adds rotation in orientation and LED flash supported.
  • Browser - Flash 10.1 support.
  • Lock Screen - pin and password enabled.
  • Search Switchable - the search widget can be switched for types:
    all, web, apps, calendar, footprints, mail, messages, music, people or
    settings,
  • Alarm - volume is now adjustae.
  • Internet Sharing - is now renamed USB tethering.
  • Android Market - widget installing app on SD Card.
  • Improved 720 p video recording.
