AT&T only allows apps from Android Market to be installed on the HTC Aria. Say you want to install a beta version of Swype or that Android app your testing, you can do it through HTC Sync. The most recent update to HTC Syncs added mobile hotspots and installation of apps via USB from your computer.
Engadget has confirmed that form HTC you can install "outsiders" apps. If you have a Windows you can sideload APKs like Swsyper over USB with by dragging and dropping over to the phone image. This appears to be an over-sight on HTC's part because of correspondence between Engaget and the HTC PR department.
