Droid News: Droid R2-D2 Freebies, Midnight Madness - How to Get

Verizon has been doing a much better job of not over promoting their super Droid smartphones ever since the Droid X and the Droid Incredible sold-out almost immediately after launch.  For the Droid 2, Verizon had a day of pre-sale online at the Verizon website and didn't have midnight madness pizza/hot dog parties.  Now it looks like the promotion wheel is entering the Star Wars Droid R2-D2 galaxy.

Besides the opening day of sales events with Star Wars characters in popular Verizon stores on the west coast, Arizona, Utah and Colorado, some major Texas stores are having midnight madness parties on September 29 and giving away free Droid R2-D2 smartphones.  It has been reported that there will only be 200 Droid R2-D2 smartphones in each store.

The latest leaked news is that the Droid R2-D2 is more than just a white Droid 2 with R2-D2 markings.  It will have a 1.2 GHz processor along with a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, 3.7-inch touchscreen, Android 2.2, 3G access, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.  The Droid 2 received good reviews for its keyboard, touchscreen and features.After seeing the Star Wars hoopla and midnight madness parties, it's hard to tell if Verizon will have another sell-out Droid.  There is a huge fan-base of Star Wars fans who, up until this point, has not had an Android smartphone with so much power available to them.  If you really want this Droid R2-D2 with the R2-D2 beeping at you when the smartphone boots, you may want to try a tactic we learned from other sell-outs.  Order the Droid R2-D2 in the wee hours of the morning on the first day of pre-sale (or sale) from the Verizon website.
