Samsung Galaxy S Update: Samsung Epic 4G - 3G Fix Coming Soon

Thumbnail image for samsungEpic4g.jpgSprint has issued a statement to confirm that it will be making software updates available for the Samsung Galaxy S, Samsung Epic 4G.  This follows a major update with Samsung Media Hub on September 16.

Update 10/01/10 - A Sprint forum admin Sprint reported that update would roll out September, 30 that fixes the 3G issue along with other issues. Then the post was changed to say that the release was delayed.

The Samsung Epic 4G update fixes 3G connectivity glitches and is considered a maintenance release and not a major upgrade to Android 2.2 Froyo.

Here's Sprint's statement:

"We have heard reports of users experiencing less-than-expected 3G upload speeds with their Samsung Epic 4G.  After extensive investigation, Sprint and Samsung have identified an enhancement that may improve upload speeds on the Epic.  This fix will be made available in the next maintenance release.  It's important to note that network speeds are impacted by many factors when using commercially-available speed test applications, and test results may or may not be a true indicator of the actual network performance."

On Wednesday AT&T released a minor update for the other Samsung Galaxy S Android phone, the Samsung Captivate.

The Samsung Epic 4G received excellent reviews and is the only Samsung Galaxy S smartphone to have full slide-out QWERTY keyboard. The Epic has a front-facing camera for video conferencing and uses Sprint's 4G data network for faster data streams.  It also has a camera flash and mobile Wi-Fi hotspot capabilities (unlimited for $29.99 a month).  4G connectivity to WiMAX comes from a ANADIGICS AWT6264 chipset.

All Samsung Galaxy S phones have a super-fast 1 GHz hummingbird processor with efficient 3D graphics processing, Super AMOLED 4-inch touchsreen, 5 megapixel camera, microSD, Wi-Fi, and Android 2.1.  The differences are in the amount of memory, keyboards and carriers.

Samsung Electronics expects to sell up to 25 million smartphones by the close of 2010.
They have already shipped 1 million Samsung Galaxy S phones to the United States.
