No TMo G2 Wi-Fi Calling, Hotspot or Update, Yet

G2update.JPGIt appears that some over zealous T-Mobile G2 owners were incorrectly reporting that the soon-to-be released update to the T-Mobile G2 had Wi-Fi calling and hotspots.  T-Mobile released this statement:

Wi-Fi Calling and tethering/Wi-Fi sharing are not currently supported on the T-Mobile G2.  T-Mobile knows these features are important to consumers, and we're working to deliver them to G2 users in the future.  We have nothing further to announce at this time.

Phonescoop reported that the T-Mobile G2 runs Android 2.2 Froyo, which does support hotspot sharing, which is not supported by T-Mobile.

What could be the case is that forum members either received the wrong update or found software that was not enabled.  Bloggers have reported that T-Mobile will offer Wi-Fi calling and hotspots in the future and speculated that there are technical glitches holding up these services.

The T-Mobile G2 has a 3.7-inch touchscreen, QWERTY keyboard, 800MHz Snapdragon MSM7230 processor, 5-megapixel HD video camera, music player and 8GB microSD memory pre-installed (supporting up to 32GB).  It comes loaded with Android 2.2 Froyo.

The Smasung Galaxy S smartphones did not ship with Android 2.2, and users are still waiting for an update to Android 2.2 Froyo.

T-Mobile sells the G2 for $199 with a contract.
