Samsung Galaxy S Update 2 Android 2.2 Froyo: Epic 4G, Fascinate, Vibrant and Captivate Coming Soon?

Koreanscreenshots.jpgThe Samsung Labs in Korea have finished testing the update to the Samsung Galaxy S phones to Android 2.2 Froyo.  A leaked email in Korean apparently confirms that Samsung is done testing Android 2.2 and that the Korean binaries will be released this week.  Binaries are the code that makes the software work.

Although some bloggers are saying that this means that Froyo is on its way to all the Samsung Galaxy S smartphones in the U.S., including the Samsung Epic 4G, Samsung Fascinate, Samsung Captivate and Samsung Vibrant.  There is no proof yet that the carriers have tested the update.

Update 01/19/11: The latest Samsung Galaxy S  update news is that the update to Android 2.2 Froyo is promised ASAP.

Update 01/20/11: The Samsung Vibrant will start getting an update to Android 2.2 tomorrow 1/21.

After the manufacturer sends the software update to the carriers, the carriers then test the update and prepare it for over-the-air (OTA) updates.

The fact that Samsung has readied the update to Android 2.2 is still good news because a T-Mobile forum post noted that the Android 2.2 update had been delayed.  A copy of the email appears at the end of this article.  If you read Korean, it would be nice if you contacted editor[at}wirelessandmobilenews.com with any important details.

The Samsung Epic 4G began getting the interim "3G-fixer" update earlier this week.  The Samsung Vibrant started receiving an OTA update with GPS fixes and Samsung Media Hub on Thursday.

Update 10/12/10 - The Samsung Vibrant update (JI6) that has 22 fixes/improvements is now available from Samsung via Samsung Mini Kies and can be downloaded through your computer.
The Samsung Epic 4G received an update to use Media Hub in September.

Many of the Samsung Galaxy S phones were named in Wireless and Mobile News' Review of Reviews Top Ten Best Android an' Droid Phones Now an' Later.

All Samsung Galaxy S phones have a super fast 1GHz hummingbird processor with efficient 3D graphics processing, Super AMOLED 4-inch touchsreen, 5-megapixel camera, microSD, Wi-Fi, and Android 2.1.  Samsung has added on TouchWiz software for a social hub as well as a media hub for online viewing.  Differences come in the amount of internal storage, size of the microSD card included, mobile hotspot capabilities, keyboard style and the speed of data networks.

We will be exploring the Samsung Galaxy S phone series in future articles.  Check the Samsung Glaxy S page to see when they appear.

  1. I purchased my Galaxy S (T-Mobile Vibrant) phone back on July 7th. been told by T-Mobile employees that the Vibrant will get the Froyo update in a few months, because my research shows that the Bluetooth hands free calling ability is only on Froyo. Hands free calling via bluetooth is VERY important to me because in a few States its illegal to have your phone out WHILE DRVING (looking at you Hawaii). The GPS update that occurred a few days ago gives the 2.1 Android OS a 2.2 feel does NOT make it 2.2. My Android superphone still doesn't do what my 10+ year Nokia phone did FLAWLESSLY! Maybe the engineers at Goolge all took busses to work.

    I want my 2.2 yesterday!

  2. I purchased the T-Mobile Vibrant on July 7, and was told that my new phone wouod get the 2.2 Froyo update in just a few months. Internet rumors said we Galaxy S owners would get thw Froyo update at the end of August. Then news said it was delayed until end of September. Of course, my GPS was messing up this whole time. After September flew by with no Froyo, first part of October we get the GPS fix. Okay, fine! Now my $500 dollar superphone should work as expected! PEOPLE, WHERE IS OUR FROYO!!!

  4. I just spoke to an AT&T rep yesterday who indicated it was delayed as well. He didn't give an indication how long but it didn't phase my purchase decision. I still went forward and got my Samsung Captivate and have yet to regret it. It works fine for me. The GPS lock was actually pretty good compared to some items I've used in the past. I did have a worse GPS than this.
