Stream video via Netflix works on Windows Phone and iPhone but not yet on Android. The Netflix blog reported that the hurdle with Android has been the lack of a generic, complete platform security and content protection mechanism.
Security issues have made it difficult for Netflix to secure a common Digital Rights Management (DRM) system across the Android platform. Netflix needs the DRM to satisfy the requirements of the major film studios.
Netflix was able to work with individual handset manufacturers to add content protection to their products. Unfortunately, this is a much slower approach and leads to a fragmented experience on Android, in which some handsets will have access to Netflix and others won't.
Although it is not the best solution, they believe that providing Netflix for some Android owners is better than denying it to everyone.
Netflix will launch select Android smartphones and tablets that will instantly stream from Netflix early next year.
Netflix also continue to work with the Android community, handset manufacturers, carriers, and other service providers to develop a standard, platform-wide solution that allows content providers to deliver their services to all Android models.
Netflix released their iPhone app in August and also the Windows Phone 7 app with the new release of Windows Phone.
