A leaked document revealed that AT&T is offering free MicroCells that extend 3G coverage in homes and other buildings. The top 7.5% of 3G subscribers who are likely to have trouble with poor indoor coverage were sent direct mailers with an offer to receive a free MicroCell upon verbal acceptance of a one-year equipment agreement.
The offer will only be available to preselected customers. MicroCells from AT&T cost $199.99 to buy. However, AT&T is currently offering a $100 rebate promotion card with a purchase of a MicroCell until February 14.
AT&T 3G MicroCell acts like a mini cellular tower indoors. It connects to AT&T's network via your
existing broadband Internet service (such as U-verse, DSL or cable) and
supports up to four simultaneous users in a home or business. Subscription to AT&T Unlimited MicroCell Calling is not required, and normal minutes from your plan rates will apply. Unlimited MicroCell Calling costs $19.99 a month.
You can only use your 3G MicroCell where AT&T is authorized to
provide wireless service. It is not intended for sale or use in homes or
areas with strong wireless signal strength. Use in strong coverage
areas may affect the performance of the device.
The address where the 3G MicroCell is physically located will be periodically verified by AT&T.
Calls will transfer to a cell tower if you leave the MicroCell coverage
area, but calls may drop if you return to the Microcell coverage area. Devices may not support all location-based wireless services or video-share services.
Of course I'd like to have stronger 3g signal in my house, but as far as I know all these stations have dangerous radiation. I think we have enough of it in our house from pcs, ovens, tv, etc. So, I'd think twice before saying "Yes, sure, I take it!"
