Owners of the Samsung Galaxy S Samsung Epic 4G were teased on various websites that an update to Android 2.2 Froyo was coming the day after Christmas. Now it seems that there is "no firm delivery date for the Froyo 2.2 update," and it is still slated for the "near future," as shown in a leaked Sprint internal document.
Near future is an interesting term because in the near past or the long past beginning of December, an official Samsung news release stated, "The Galaxy S portfolio will be upgraded to the Android 2.2 (Froyo) operating system in the near future." The last rumors were by year end, with Tweets saying that Samsung is working with carriers in the U.S.
Rumors have been circulating since September for Samsung Galaxy S updates. Now the latest contention is that Samsung and the U.S. carriers will update the update to Android 2.3 Gingerbread with absolutely no confirmation from Samsung in the near future or distant past.
We've seen the delay of updates for BlackBerry, Android an' Droid smartphones. The problem isn't the core "pure" Android but the added-on bloatware and customized user interfaces that the carriers put on top of the O.S. We are sympathetic to the carriers because we've been dealing with apps that work fine on smartphones, but once they're entered into the carrier's system and sent over-the-air, they don't work even though the files are working fine on the phones themselves.
The Nexus S is pure Android and has almost all the hardware of the
Samsung Galaxy S smartphones, except for the added Samsung Media and
Social Hubs. Even though the Nexus S is not the top of the
line in terms of power and features, some reviewers believe that it is
worth buying because users won't have to wait for the carriers to
"brand" updates.
We know that owners of the Samsung Epic 4G, Samsung Fascinate, Samsung Captivate and Samsung Vibrant have been eagerly awaiting an update to Froyo, which is supposed to fix GPS problems. The GPS problems on the Samsung Vibrant and Captivate can be helped with a new Samsung app, Samsung GPS Restore.
The Samsung Galaxy S update to Android 2.2 includes many well-liked features,
including an Adobe Flash compatibility, speed improvements, better
keyboard, Samsung Media Hub, better Microsoft Exchange support, and
storing of apps on the microSD card (see list of update features).
