Microsoft has discovered that a third party was responsible for Windows Phone 7 handsets receiving and sending data, causing customers to pay more for monthly data usage than they had expected.
Microsoft Windows Phone 7 owners noticed that some phones will sending and receiving 30-50 MB of data a day. The lowest cost data plan from AT&T is 200MB for $15 a month, which would be spent quickly with the problem. The DataPro plan is $25 for 2GB of data.
Due to complaints to Microsoft, Microsoft investigated and found that "a third-party solution commonly accessed from
Windows Phones is configured in a manner that may potentially cause
larger than expected data downloads."
Microsoft contacted the other party and is going to help them fix it. Microsoft said that only a low percentage of Windows Phone 7 owners experienced the problem.
The first day of Windows Phone 7 sales totaled 40,000. Ovum recently predicted that Windows Phone 7 will upset the smartphone balance of power.
