The update to Android 2.2 Froyo (KB1) for the Samsung Galaxy S Samsung Captivate is now live.
As we suspected, you will need to download Kies Mini onto your computer and then reboot your computer with your Captivate connected to a USB cable. The upgrade will not work with an Apple computer.
The FAQ for the update advises that you do not take your Samsung Captivate into an AT&T store because stores do not generally have the proper tools to perform software
upgrades. The webpage warns that you should be sure to backup your contacts, music, video and data before starting the update process.
The KB1 update has two parts. One part is the update to Android 2.2 Froyo with USB tethering/hotspot, Flash 10.1 support, MS Exchange improvements, OS optimization, and ability to install apps on the microSD card. The other part of the update improves security, Swype performance, and includes "Out of Office" options. There is a new default browser Homepage. The update fixes Bluetooth, calendar, Buddies Now, animated GIFS, and messaging glitches.
While the computer is restarting, you will need to configure the Samsung Captivate
so that Kies Mini can talk to it. Follow the steps below:
- On the phone, USB Debugging should be enabled. To do this, go
to Settings > Applications > Development > USB debugging. Tap Ok to the message. - Plug the cable into the phone and then into the
computer. The computer should detect new hardware and install
automatically. - Unplug the cable from the phone and power off the
device. Hold down both the volume up & down keys while inserting the
data cable. The phone will enter a Downloading mode. The computer will
then install the rest of the driver files. If there is a problem with
Windows finding the driver, let it search online to grab them. Once the
computer has finished, unplug the device from the computer, remove the
cover, remove the battery, insert the battery, and place the cover back
on. You can now power on the device. - Restart the computer.
You can now open Kies Mini on the compute and answer prompts on the computer screen. Details of the update and Kies Mini download are available from Samsung.
The Android 2.2 Froyo Update will not fix standby shut-down problems experienced on Samsung Captivate phones made before 11/06/201, which is a hardware issue (read details).
