So far the Samsung Vibrant is the only US Samsung Galaxy S phone to get an update to Android 2.2 Froyo. For a very brief time, bloggers reported that AT&T released an update for the Samsung Captivate with instructions, but then it disappeared.
Update 02/18/11: Sprint will release an update to Android 2.2 Froyo for the Samsung Epic 4G on 2/22.
We've contacted the AT&T spokesblogger Seth Bloom to find out what happened and when the update will be ready.
John, a rep from Samsung, reached the XDA Developer forum, who asked Samsung Galaxy S owners to answer a voting poll that asks the BEST technical
questions. He concludes with, "Please don't ask questions about any future release dates of hardware and software questions."
The Android 2.2 Froyo Update will not fix standby shut-down problems experienced on Samsung Captivate phones made before 11/06/201, which is a hardware issue (read details).
Previously, we learned that the Android 2.2 Froyo update was still being tested. In the meantime, one of our readers wrote that the carriers already have the update, specifically, Sprint.
There have been many promises made by Samsung and the carriers in the past, such as the promised update in the "near future" that was changed to "ASAP."
The Samsung Galaxy S update to Android 2.2 has many well-liked features,
including Adobe Flash compatibility, speed improvements, a better
keyboard, Samsung Media Hub, better Microsoft Exchange support, and
the storing of apps on the microSD card (see list of update features).
The newest Samsung Galaxy S phone the Samsung Galaxy S 4G will launch on T-Mobile on February 23.
