Samsung Galaxy S Update: Samsung Captivate Update to Android 2.2 Froyo 2/24

SamsungGalaxySUpdateNews.jpgThere will finally be an update to Android 2.2 Froyo for the Samsung Galaxy S, Samsung Captivate from AT&T.

Update 02/24/11 The update for the Samsung Galaxy S Samsung Captivate is now live and requires Kies Mini installed on a computer.

AT&T announced today, via its Facebook page, that tomorrow  (2/24) AT&T will post a link to the Samsung website along with instructions on how to to install the update for the Samsung Captivate to Android 2.2 Froyo.

Because AT&T said that it will be placing a link, we think the update will require the Samsung Kies Mini app and an USB connection for the update.

Last week a webpage for an update to Android Froyo 2.2 appeared for the Samsung Captivate with instructions that mysteriously disappeared.

The Android 2.2 Froyo Update will not fix standby shut-down problems experienced on Samsung Captivate phones made before 11/06/201, which is a hardware issue (read details).

The Samsung Epic 4G started getting an Over-the-Air (OTA) update yesterday.  The Samsung Vibrant was graced by a Froyo update in January.  The only major carrier that has not updated its Samsung Galaxy S phones to Android 2.2 Froyo is Verizon, with no updates yet for the Samsung Fascinate and Samsung Continuum.

Samsung Galaxy S updates to Froyo were formerly promised in the "near future" but were changed to "ASAP."

The Samsung Galaxy S update to Android 2.2 has many well-liked features,
including Adobe Flash compatibility, speed improvements, a better
keyboard, Samsung Media Hub, better Microsoft Exchange support, and
the storing of apps on the microSD card (see list of update features).

The newest Samsung Galaxy S phone, the Samsung Galaxy S 4G, will launch on T-Mobile today.

Many of the Samsung Galaxy S phones were named in Wireless and Mobile News' Review of Reviews Top Ten Best Android an' Droid Phones Now an' Later, as well as the Top Ten Best Smartphones.

AT&T's Android Product Manager, Dante Martin, answers the question, "Why are the updates taking for ever?"  The smartphone maker has to add on other bits to the Google code after it gets the code from Google.  That takes time.  Testing takes time.  Then AT&T tests it.  Cut and Paste is available for the Motorola Atrix
