Text Relief Donations to Help Japan Earthquake & Tsunami Victims

The mGive Foundation (www.mgive.org) has set up text-based giving campaigns in response to the earthquake and tsunami in Japan.

On Twitter, many Twitter account holders are offering to donate one dollar to the Red Cross every time some one retweets their message about texting aid for Japan.

Twitterers are also tweeting, "Tonight at 9.30pm. The whole world is going to pray for Japan for a minute. Please broadcast this text to give Japan the hopes to live."

A nice suggestion is this tweet "Hey media, take a break from #CharlieSheen and focus on #Japan. Text "Redcross" 90999 to give $10."

AT SXSW designers have set up SXSW4Japan.org, on site to raise money.  Google Tsunami/Earthquake Person Finder will help families and friends find each other.

For those who want to donate to the relief effort, a simple text message gives $10.

Here are agencies you can text to donate and help Japan:

  • Convoy of Hope, text TSUNAMI to 50555 to donate $10.
  • American Red Cross Relief, text REDCROSS to 90999 to donate $10.
  • World Relief Corp. of National Association of Evangelicals, text WAVE to 50555 to donate $10.
  • GlobalGiving, text JAPAN to 50555 to donate $10.

When prompted, mobile donors should reply with YES to confirm a one-time gift.

The $10 one-time donation will appear on your next mobile bill.  All donations are tax deductible, and receipts may be printed at mGive.org/receipt.  Message and data rates may apply.

Nonprofits working with the mGive Foundation to support their mobile giving campaigns receive 100 percent pass-through of funds raised.
