Nielsen released new survey results that showed the Android OS as having the largest market share of smartphone ownership and is also the most desirable.
Android wins when it comes to number of smartphones owned. As of March 2011, 37 percent of smartphone consumers had an Android OS smartphone. Apple's iOS, claimed by 27 percent of consumers, surpasses Blackberry, which has 22 percent of the market.
Half of those surveyed, in March 2011, who said they purchased a smartphone in the past six months, had chosen Android. A quarter of recent acquirers said they bought an iPhone and 15 percent said they had picked a Blackberry smartphone
The most recent survey showed 31 percent of consumers who plan to get a new smartphone indicated Android was now their preferred OS. Apple's iOS has slipped slightly in popularity to 30 percent, and RIM Blackberry is down to 11 percent. Almost 20 percent of consumers are unsure of what to choose next. Last fall, 33% wanted to buy an iPhone, 25% wanted to buy Android, and 13% opted for BlackBerry.
