A day before the release of the Droid Charge, we've been monitoring releases of preliminary reviews and unboxings of the second 4G LTE smartphone to use the Verizon Wireless 5G-rated 4G LTE network data. The reviews are positive, showing tests with fast data speeds and almost every review praising the Super AMOLED screen.
Update 04/28/11 - The release of the Droid Charge has been delayed.
Besides getting free mobile hotspots when you buy the Droid Charge, you also get HDMI out port and exceptional data speeds.
Reviewers liked the hard buttons on the chin of the Samsung Droid Charge, and moving through homescreens is fast. The Super AMOLED touchscreen can be seen outdoors in bright light. Battery life seems to be OK and was described as ultra vibrant and the best-ever-seen.
The Droid Charge seems to be a winner because Amazon Wireless already has it on backorder.
The Droid Charge goes on sale at Verizon Wireless tomorrow at 3:00 am EST. We learned with previous Droid sellouts that night owls who order online early get first dibs at getting the latest and greatest Droid from Verizon. Wirefly is already taking preorders and is discounting the Droid Charge.
Lisa Gade from MobileTech Review showed the clicking buttons on the lower chin of the Samsung Droid Charge. The micro HDMI port has a little door over it. She called the back "plasticky." Quadrant test result was a 931. The TouchWhiz interface has a wheel for moving around icons. Data speeds in Dallas were as fast a 11-14 Mbps down and 4.5-7 Mbps up. Kindle, Verizon Backup, V Cast and BlockBuster are preloaded. Call quality was worrisome, with below average reception. Flash Video looked almost as good as viewing video on a PC. She called the video playing "pretty good." Battery life was O.K.
Phone Arena reported that Super AMOLED touchscreen showed crisp text and good color saturation, and it was easy to view when outdoors in bright light. They liked the physical buttons for operating Android. In the demo, moving through the home screens went very quickly. It's about the same size as the HTC ThunderBolt, which is a little thicker. The power-lock key is on the side of the Droid Charge. Overall, it's pretty nice. Phone Arena also tested the data speed of the Samsung Droid Charge and got, on average, 4-6 Mbps download and 3-4 Mbps upload.
Jame Kendrick at ZDNet liked the Droid Charge for its light weight, beautiful display and fast operation. He didn't like the control button or the slippery back of the phone. He called the display the best he has ever seen on a phone.
