Verizon Wireless often sends OTA (Over-the-Air) updates as a test to a few lucky customers before rolling out the big updates that start on Fridays, which is to avoid having business smartphones tied up during the work week. Although Verizon has not made any official notification, Droid X owners
have reported getting an update to Android 2.3 called 4.5.588. It takes
5 minutes to install.
We have been diligently checking the Verizon Droid X update support page to see if Verizon has officially launched the update to Android 2.3 Gingerbread.
We called our local Verizon store, and the rep said that, when there is an OTA update, users will be notified directly on their Droid X smartphones.
The Gingerbread Android 2.3 update usually includes user-interface refinements,
one-touch copy/paste, better power management, VoIP, NFC, download
management, audio effects, new media format support, and multiple-camera
access. NFC is not supported on all phones.
Some people have leaked and posted the Droid X update online. We do not suggest that you attempt an unofficial update since the last update to Droid X caused many problems on our unit.
We believe that it is worth waiting a few weeks until the official update comes out. Verizon carefully tests its update, and to avoid having to spend a lot of time dealing with problems, waiting is a better option for most users.
When updating any Droid phone, be sure that your battery is at least 40%
charged and that you have at least half an hour to wait for the process
to complete. Just in case, you should also back up your contacts, photos,
and note what software you had installed.
You cannot use your
phone or make emergency calls during the update. Some settings and
applications will revert to default but may be resynced or reset
following the completion of the upgrade.

YOU CAN WAIT BUT THIS UPDATE KICKS ASS, ALTHOUGH THEY ARE RIGHT ABOUT THE LAST GINGERBREAD LEAK WAS CRAP, BUT THIS NEW VERSION IS VERY NICE. ONLY DOWN SIDE I SEE IS NOT BEING ABLE TO ROOT YET. BUT I'M SURE SOME ONE WILL FIGURE THAT OUT SOON.
Did the rooted upgrade, it is truly amazing and I thought Froyo was good.
