One of the complaints AT&T Android customers have had is that they can only use Android Market Apps, not Amazon store apps or any other Android app.
Today, AT&T is rolling out OTA (Over-the-Air) updates to the HTC Inspire 4G, HTC Aria and Samsung Captivate that allow users to download and install non-Android Market apps.
The update allows users of the above-mentioned smartphones to load third-party apps from other servers, links and/or microSD cards. The Samsung Infuse 4G already has the ability to "sideload" apps.
More AT&T Android smartphones will be updated after May 23. The update is restricted to Android 2.2 Froyo phones.
Make sure that your HTC Inspire 4G, HTC Aria or Samsung Captivate is at least 50% charged. It's always a good idea to back up your data
first. You will not be able to make emergency phone calls during the
update process.
You will receive a notification message or you can check for it yourself:
- Tap Settings icon in the main menu.
- Select "About phone."
- Select "System updates," or "AT&T Software Update."
- Follow on-screen directions.
