Many rumors have been circulating about the next release date for many super smartphones from Verizon Wireless. The latest rumors focus on the release date of the Droid X2, which will be the only dual-core processor smartphone on Verizon Wireless running Android Gingerbread 2.3.
Dummy units of the Droid X2 have arrived at Costco stores. A leaked internal Verizon document shows a May 26 release date with direct fulfillment, starting on May 18. If the document is real, it means that Verizon is getting ready for the Droid X2 launch.
The fact that the Droid X2 comes loaded with Gingerbread fuels the suspicion that the originial Droid X may be getting an update to Android 2.3 Gingerbread soon. However, according to the official Motorola forum, there is no release date set yet for the update to Gingerbread for Droid X.The Droid X2 has a qHD (540 x 960) touchscreen, Android 2.2 Froyo (updated to 2.3 Gingerbread later), 512MB RAM, an 8-megapixel camera, FM radio, locked/encrypted boot loader and HDMI port. Add to that 2GB of secure storage with 6GB non-removable shared storage, 32 microSD, GPS, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth. The Droid X2 is expected to cost $199.99.
