Droid X owners have been waiting for an update to Android 2.3 Gingerbread for a while. Today is the release date for the update.
We’ve been monitoring the questions about the update on the Verizon support Twitter account and Motorola support forums and found out that the Droid X update is being pushed out in batches and could take a week for everyone to get the update.
Here’s the pertinent information about the Droid X Android 2.3 update to Gingerbread today that should answer most questions about the update:
- The update starts today. Historically, it takes 1 week+ for everyone to get the update. It will be pushed to your phone when available.
- Gingerbread is available for the Droid X only as of today. The update is delivered to the device in batches.
- Software update is being pushed out in batches to Droid X owners as
soon as possible. Eventually, all devices will be updated. - As with past updates, it’s pushed in groups of users at a time to avoid overload.
- The update cannot be done at a store. It will be sent to your Droid X directly.
- There’s not a specific order on how the pushed-out update will be sent to the device. Verizon is working to get them out quickly.
- Started today! Software updates can take a week or more to fully complete.
- Beginning 5/27, a new update to the Gingerbread OS will be available on the DROID X.
- You’re more than welcome to check for updates manually.
The list of features in Android 2.3 Gingerbread update are impressive,
with the addition of download manager, active app management,
shortcuts, one-touch copy/paste, widgets, icons, app groups, updated
calendar options, camera geotagging, improved email synching and camera
auto-focus improvements.
Gingerbread 2.3 features also include user-interface refinements, audio effects, new media format support, and multiple-camera
access.
It will take you approximately 20 to 40 minutes to download the software, depending on network conditions.
You can check for the update yourself on your Droid X. From the main
menu, Tap Menu> Tap Settings> Tap About phone> Tap System
update> Tap Download.
When updating any Droid phone, be sure that your battery is at least 40%
charged and that you have at least half an hour to wait for the process
to complete. To be safe, you should also back up your contacts, photos,
and note what software you had installed.
