Verizon Motorola Xoom tablet owners were the first to receive the update to Android 3.1 Honeycomb supporting the Android Market movie rentals. Motorola Xoom with Wi-Fi tablet owners started getting the update today. The Wi-Fi update does not support Android Market movie rentals, yet.
According to the Motorola support forum, the update to Android 3.1 Honeycomb is rolled out in phases. This means that they queue up a certain percentage of the updates to roll out over a period of time. If your Motorola Xoom is not included in the current list that has been pushed, you can't download it.The Motorola Forum manager Matt posted today, "The rollout to Wi-Fi users has started -- but the movies function won't be available from Google at rollout. Google is saying in the near future. My personal opinion only is that means probably two or three weeks, but again, that's just my opinion."
Google completely controls the rollout and is based entirely on how your Motorola Xoom checks in on its server.
Motorola does not have information on the timing of updates to non-U.S. Motorola Xooms. When they do, they will post in their forums.
Once you get the update, you then you can enable the check-for-updates feature. Honeycomb 3.1 update enables the ability for you to "check now" for updates. So for those that are nervously awaiting future updates, you can now just sit there pressing the "check now" button all day until your Xoom finds an update or it needs recharging.
Android 3.1 is an incremental platform release with new components, including UI enhancements, external USB device connections (keyboards/mice), Wi-Fi lock, and more browser features.
Besides fixing bugs, after the update, encrypted passwords can be entered during power up. It adds a shortcut key for Bluetooth keyboards. Google Talk via Bluetooth is supported. Full versions of POP3 email will be displayed.
