The Sprint Nexus S 4G is getting an update, as well as a promotion from the the Google homepage, shortly after its release date, May 8.
The update GRJ22 is an OTA (Over-the-Air) maintenance update to the Nexus S 4G and includes improved performance and device security, international roaming with Google Voice, and tags application when using between two Nexus S devices.
The best thing about the Sprint Nexus S 4G is that it comes preloaded with Android Gingerbread, including a host of new features. The ad on the Google homepage says, "New! Fast just got faster. Nexus S, now available on 4G." The price tag of advertising on the usually-ad-free Google homepage was estimated by Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster to be worth between $4 and $5 million (at a $15 or $20 CPM) if it were an ad that had to be bought. If you were worrying why the update wasn't released at the same time as the Sprint Nexus S 4G was released, a Sprint Forum administrator wrote, "It's a software update that wasn't ready early enough to include on the launch handsets. The alternative would have been to delay the launch of the device. In this particular case, Google and Sprint didn't feel this update warranted a delay in the device launch."
