On the eve of the release date of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 Verizon confirmed that its other tablet the Motorola Xoom will be getting an upgrade to 4G LTE for free sometime in September.
The way the upgrade will work is that Motorola Xoom owners will have to send their
tablets to the Motorola where the component will be installed. It will
be returned in six day.
Recent FCC filings showed the Motorola 4G LTE module for the Motorola Xoom.
Verizon reported that data will not be deleted. However Motorola Xoom owners are urged to backup data before sending in their tablets. Verizon has an upgrade page on its website, where owners can sign up for 4G LTE upgrade notifications.
Verizon also recommends performing encryption and a factory
reset.
For those who are hoping for a software update to Android Honeycomb 3.2 for the Verizon Motorola Xoom . Motorola tweeted two weeks ago that the "Verizon users can expect a rollout in the coming weeks."
When the Motorola Xoom was launched 4G LTE access was promised. Some believe the delay is due to Motorola manufacturing the 4G LTE chips themselves. If the 4G LTE upgrade for the Motorola Xoom is not due until September, it may mean a delay for the Droid Bionic as well.
