Verizon Tiered Data Plans Revealed - Solutions for Unlimited & Dual-Core Droid Bionic or Samsung Galaxy Function?

VerizonData3.JPGA Verizon spy has posted the details of the impending changes to Verizon's data plans starting July 7.

Update 07/05/11 - We spoke with Verizon's spokeswoman Brenda Raney who detailed the usage-based data plans for current and future customers.

Verizon Wireless Data plans for new customers will be:

  • 75MB for $10 a month (each 75MB over $10) feature phones only.
  • 2GB a month for $30, $10 per GB over.
  • 5GB a month
for $50, $10 per GB over.
  • 10GB a month for $80, $10 per GB over.
  • Mobile hotspots or use as tethered modem will cost $20 a month for 2GB.  When you buy the mobile hotspot/tether plan, you can combine data with the other plans paid for.

As we discussed previously, current Verizon unlimited data customers will be grandfathered for unlimited data.

What has been vexing for our readers is what they should do if they want to wait for a Droid Bionic that has a suspected release date of July 28 from Verizon and August 4 or later from third-party retailers (like-Costco).  What about the Samsung Galaxy S II Function?
Verizon Wireless shortened the allowable exchange period to 14 days when it began selling the iPhone.

Our Facebook fan offered a brilliant solution.  Costco wireless dealers offer a ninety-day return policy.

If you sign up for an unlimited smartphone data plan before July 7 at Costco and buy a Samsung Droid Charge, you could return it for a Droid Bionic or Samsung Function if they release within 90 days.

Costco, however, does not guarantee that they will carry the Droid Bionic or Samsung Function.

Update 07/04/11
-Another creative solution for Droid Bionic buyers is to buy a used Droid on eBay and buy unlimited smartphone plan for it, then you can buy another smartphone when it comes out.  We just saw a screenshot that showed an August 4, release date for the Droid Bionic from an anonymous source.

If you have any other solutions, please post it to our Facebook wall.

Whatever a sales associate tells you, make sure that you get the return policy in writing before you sign any contract.
