Google has bought Motorola Mobility. So what does this mean to Android smartphone buyers? At first glance it looks like a win-win situation.
Many analysts are claiming that the ownership of Motorola patents is the most important part of the deal. There have been a flurry of lawsuits in the industry, owning the Motorola patents will help Google defend its Android territory.
The news release claims "The acquisition of Motorola Mobility, a dedicated Android partner, will
enable Google to supercharge the Android ecosystem and will enhance
competition in mobile computing. Motorola Mobility will remain a
licensee of Android and Android will remain open. Google will run
Motorola Mobility as a separate business."
Smartphone specialists contend that when Google controls the hardware like Apple does it will make for faster updates and better smartphones.
Some believe that Microsoft may get the biggest boost from the deal with smartphone makers choosing the Windows Phone OS over Android.
The best news for Droid fans is that those long-awaited updates of Android to Gingerbread and Ice Cream Sandwich should be out much faster.
