HTC is living up to its promise and allowing owners of some HTC smartphone models to unlock the bootloader. The unlock process is now available for the HTC Sensation EU. This ability is really not that important for average user but helpful to developers. The next unlockable bootloaders will be the HTC Sensation 4G and HTC EVO 3D.
The unlocking process requires the downloading and installation of the Android SDK and authorizing a legal disclaimer. The web tool requires registration with an email account and a acceptance of
legal disclaimers that unlocking may void all or parts of the warranty. Then the user plugs in the HTC smartphone into a computer with the
Android SDK loaded to retrieve a device identifier token is made, which
users enter into the web tool to receive a unique unlock key via email.
After entering the unlock key the smartphone will be unlocked
The FAQ explains the process and why HTC created the web/PC-based system for unlocking the bootloader.
HTC was overwhelmed by the enthusiasm of our fans for the possibilities
of developing software for HTC devices. HTC has a strong commitment to
our developers and, in line with the launch of HTCdev.com and the OpenSense SDK, we felt it was important to fully enable developer success and unlock the bootloaders on our devices.
"Our devices have been designed with our hardware and software
specifications in mind and unlocking the bootloader will change the
software and may cause unexpected side effects. It is impossible for HTC
to ensure the proper functioning of your device after this."
