While Verizon Wireless expands its 4G LTE markets to 143, AT&T will launch LTE in five new markets on Sunday, September 18, along with the possible launch of Samsung Galaxy S II. AT&T CEO John Stephens announced that AT&T will launch LTE service in Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Houston and San Antonio.
The only devices currently available from AT&T to work with its 4G LTE network are the USBConnect Momentum 4G, Mobile Hotspot Elevate 4G and the HTC Jetstream. AT&T is expected to launch a smartphone that works with the network later this year.
The AT&T USBConnect Momentum 4G has plug-and-play installation of AT&T Communication Manager and access to AT&T Wi-Fi access.
The AT&T Mobile Hotspot Elevate 4G features include a 1.77-inch display and creates up to five Wi-Fi connections to the internet.
Both modems offer an expandable memory slot that supports microSD cards up to 32GB and global connectivity with data roaming in more than 200 countries. When not in LTE areas, they will access to AT&T's nationwide HSPA+ network.
The HTC Jestream was launched a few weeks ago and has gotten good reviews for data speeds.
Stephens also reported that 45% of AT&T smartphone users(15M customers) are on usage-based smartphone data plans. One-third of the usage-based users are on the $15 per month 200MB plan whille two-thirds pay for the $25 2GB plan.
Saturday is not the 18th... the 18th is Sunday and second... the Samsung Galaxy S2 has never been officially set to launch on AT&T on the 18th.
Sorry about that. It was previously reported by people who attended the Samsung S II event in New York that the AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II would launch on September 18.
We've corrected the errors, by stating "possible luanch date."
The problem with launch dates is that the carriers have had to push back dates so often, they have almost stopped announcing release dates at all.
