As we approach the holiday season with those adorable Gingerbread cookies and houses, it should be nice for original Droid Incredible owners to have that snappy Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread in their houses without any glitches. However the latest Gingerbread update appears to be crumbling.
According to Verizon spokesman Albert Aydin the update for the Droid Incredible (Build Number: 4.08.605.2; Baseband Version: 2.15.10.07.07) began being pushed out last night.
We contacted Aydin this morning and he is checking on the issues with the update reported on Twitter and in the Droid Incredible Verizon support forum. The update upgrades the smartphone to Android 2.3.4 and fixes other issues.
The first update to Android 2.3 Gingerbread was pulled (4.06). Now it looks like new updates that were pushed out, have glitches and have been pulled until later.
@VZWsupport on Twitter is atwitter with messages in which Droid Incredible owners got notifications of updates and then when trying to update there was no update available. We checked on an Incredible, last night at 10:00pm and there was no update available.
Other Droid Incredible owners who received a new update, get "not enough space" notices. In Verizon's Droid Incredible support forum members have reported that they tried to update their Droid Incredible phones, received a "no room" message and then check and there is no update available.
Those who received an update on 11/14 noticed that the voice command, Bluetooth and other features stopped working. The next update gave the "not enough room" message.
A forum member posted "Verizon Support said there is nothing they can do to help me."
Posted at 11/16 8:46am: "VZW customer service called me this morning (after placing a call into them yesterday) to advise me that 4.06 was pulled for those of us who did not rush to install the update and 4.08 will be made available in the next 24 hours. Glad I did not jump to install yesterday, the alert for 4.06 being available on my phone is no longer there, system shows up to date, and I'll wait until 4.08 pops up before attempting any next steps.
Another forum member posted at 9:04 AM "HTC has pulled update 4.08"
When we checked the Verizon HTC Droid Incredible update page the notice still says "Coming Soon."
As soon as we hear back from Albert Aydin, well let you know the official word on the Droid Incredible update.
The list of features in the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update are impressive, with the addition of download manager, active app management, shortcuts, one-touch copy/paste, widgets, icons, app groups, updated calendar options, camera geotagging, improved email synching, and camera auto-focus improvements. Update 11/22/11: There are reports from readers and in the Verizon Droid Incredible support forum that the update is working for some. However @VZWSupport on Twitter shows there are still "not enough memory" issues with the Gingerbread update. Whereas this is holiday week, it will hard to reach our contacts. Any suggestions you have please post in the comments.

Exactly my problem outlined here. Got the first update 11/15/11 to Gingerbread 2.3.4, then another this morning. Went to install this latest one only to get the "Not Enough Memory" message. Fixed the memory, then POOF! Update gone. PS - why are they pushing these updates at like 1:30am? I couldn't tell if it was right after I went to sleep or 6am... too delirious to remember and why I even picked up my phone to see what was going on in the first place.
We should have an answer from Verizon Wireless soon.
Same exact problem here. And my Gmail isn't working properly at all today on my device. Super, super delayed, not syncing, not sending properly. A reboot fixes it 1 time, then it happens again. Thanks for keeping us updated.
I got the 2.3.4 update back mid September for the original Droid Inc. Some neat new features, plus a lot of bugs as well. This morning I got the install new update message, stated the installing and got the our of memory message, cleared out some space, then no update to be found. Contacted Verizon and was told that the update would be pushed out again, but did not know when. Will see what happens, hope it fixes these bugs. If not, will be time for a new phone upgrade in a few more months anyway.
Got my 4.08 update this morning and everything works fine.
I have the exact issue Broseph. My update was at 2:30 I believe. Disappointment...I just put a gingerbread cookie under my battery and called it quits.
Oh, and I have the previous version of the market now, with the half green and all the apps on SD are not recognized.
I received the notification about the update this morning on my Incredible and went ahead and applied it (it is showing that I'm now at 2.3.4). Interestingly enough, the update seems to have fixed an issue that I've been experiencing for the past few weeks-- the dreaded "low on phone memory" problem. My phone has run better today than it has in weeks.
Excellent article! Thank you for at least shedding some light on this mystery. The forums were all spinning about this last night. I sent in a Support request last night to Verizon (I had the 'not enough space' msg on the second update also), but have not heard back. Now I know why.
Can I just thank you guys for writing an accurate article about the gingerbread update for the incredible? In the past, it seemed like no one could grasp what was actually occurring on our phones. This is exactly what happened to me. Downloaded 4.06 and my phone is actually faster. SD card apps aren't recognized though, and I've had a few problems running regular apps as well with strange "you must sign in to run this app" messages. Received the 4.08 notification, but it wouldn't install because of low memory. Waiting for the next attempt. What is this now 5th, 6th overall?
I've had the same problems. Usually if you make sure the "fast boot" is unchecked and restart the phone, apps from the SD card will show up again. Uncheck Fast boot under "Settings" >> "Applications"
Do we have any word from them yet? My phone just isnt the same since all these updates. I hope they get this all fixed. My phone is down to nothing and I still have the low memory message.
I avoided the update on my phone but my wife downloaded it before we knew it was a bad update. She's on the 4.0.6 firmware.
I was able to get rid of the "Low on Space" warning after I discovered that the com.htc.socialnetwork.provider (I think that was it, it was something like that) was using over 30Mb of data. Once I cleared that the space warning disappeared.
Hope they come out with a good update soon.
I had problems with HTC Sync, that were only fixed by un-installing and re-installing HTC Sync on my PC.
Here is my issue and the recommended course of action given by HTC:
I too ran into the same problem this week...phone upgraded to 4.06 but ran out of memory when upgrading to 4.08. I was then stuck on 4.06 resulting in numerous features not working or not working well. When I subsequently checked system updates hoping to get 4.08, it says I was up-to-date despite being on 4.06.
Even though my phone storage showed I had lots of space, HTC had me delete a couple of the larger programs. (They said Twitter and Facebook are culprits since temp files build up over time.) The low memory warning went away.
They then had me dial *#*#243546#*#* on my phone (no need to hit dial at the end). In the next 3 - 7 days, I should get another opportunity to download 4.08 as a result of 'checking in' by dialing the number above.
From what I gathered chatting with the customer service rep and doing subsequent research online, my opportunity to download 4.08 had passed since it gets rolled out geographically. By checking in, I'll get another opportunity to download 4.08 shortly.
I'll post again if and when I receive the update. Hopefully it will clear up the problems of 4.06. I now realize how dependent I've become on smart phones to run my business.
I am having a lot of issues with Android Version 2.3.4 on my HTC Incredible. My phone will not save anything, photos, notes, etc. Ii keeps saying I am low on space and then a new one popped up this morning, "Storage almost full: Please make at least 512KB free space to receive messages. Tap to manage your ap" it gets cut off there. I have deleted a bunch of apps off the phone and my phone storage is showing plenty of room. Right now it is saying my mail app is at 55.01 MB which I know is not true. I have cleared out every one of my mail folders. When I try to manage the mail app it won't let me clear the data or cache. This is very frustrating considering my phone updated last night and has been going haywire ever since.
Does anyone know how I can clear my mail or any other fix? I am about to put the phone through the wall.
I have plenty of memory on my phone and SD card but was still getting the same message. When you click on the low memory warning it will take you to the applications you need to check. Or you can go to settings, applications, manage applications, all. Click on each application. My culprit was the first one, contacts. I got brave and pressed clear data. The low space message went away instantly. And my contacts base was unaffected. (Maybe this is some kind of temp file?)
I have an Incredible with Froyo and avoided the first round of updates until I was certain it was safe. I got the update notice the evening of Nov 19th and waited until now to update. Everything went fine. In preparation I moved anything I didn't want to lose onto the SD card and removed it. I also cleared all app caches to free up a little space. I initiated the download and let the phone sit on the charger for about 15-20 minutes even though it looked like it froze a couple times. All went well, no space issues, texting issues, app loss, etc. So for those who didn't pull the trigger on the 4.06 update, or the more recent 4.08, things should be ok now.
Even after receiving the 4.08 update by checking-in, as I missed the first opportunity due to the out of space problem, I am still having LOTS of problems.
For one, the low space problem still exists. So I have a very barren phone right now so that texts and emails will get pushed to me. I tried installing all the programs I had on my phone pre-2.3.4 and the low space error just returns. To be clear, it's saying I have low space when in fact I am not even using HALF of the space on my phone. Nice.
My second problem is with Pandora and Slacker while using 3g only. They worked perfectly well prior to the update, but now they both cut off songs after about 1 minute and skip to the next. Neither one can finish an entire song. I use Pandora daily. I know that this problem did not manifest until immediately after the update.
My third problem is spotty bluetooth. I use a bluetooth headset (Sennheiser MM 400) to listen to Pandora. It will drop at the most random times now. It never dropped before.
HTC and Verizon need to fix this. Now. I'm paying for a service that I am no longer getting. All this smart phone can reliably do now is make calls. They should refund me the data charge for this month. If it lasts past this month then they should give all Incredible users free upgrades. My wife and I BOTH have the incredible. We are both having similar problems. It's not acceptable.
I updated my phone 11-20-11 and now my phone shuts off on its own, I charge the battery and in minutes it needs to be plugged in again. A new home screen appear every time it restarts. I can't send out text, it just shuts off many other problems, too much to list.
