There have been reports that there is an update ready to go for the Samsung Droid Charge update to Android 2.3 Gingerbread named "i510.EP4" The Verizon support page says "Coming Soon," however, there have been reports of Droid Charge by Samsung owners, receiving the update.
Along with Android Gingerbread features the update adds messaging signature setting, encrypts hotspot password, software upgrade assist and the volume of the Low Battery Notification sound has been reduced. Improvements have been made to audio, Bluetooth, camera, data connections/usage, email and calendar sync.
There are reports in more than one place, that some lucky Droid Charge owners have gotten updates. Before you get all excited, the first round of updates are usually the slowest. On the first day, there are very few updates sent out over-the-air. Then over time Verizon ramps up the update with major push on Thursdays or as late as Fridays.
We've contacted Verizon PR rep Albert Aydin to find out when the full roll-out of the update will occur.
The list of features in the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update are impressive, with the addition of download manager, active app management, shortcuts, one-touch copy/paste, widgets, icons, app groups, updated calendar options, camera geotagging, improved email synching, and camera auto-focus improvements. You will be notified that a system update is available on your Droid Charge. Tap Install now to continue. Your device will power off then power on and the installation will begin.
After you've received first notification of the system update, you can manually initiate by going to "Home" > "Applications" > "Settings" > "About Device" > "System updates". Press "Restart & install".
I didn't get any update notification, has anyone out there?
Just got my update, Very slow install, 12/03/11 at 138am PST
I just got this this morning and it is amazing. It has helped the battery life, fixed my plug not charing correctly, negated lag time and all glitches, and it has the new gingerbread (i think) interface. LOVE IT!
I was told this is not a gingerbread update from a Verizon representative via online chat today. Although yesterday a representative told me it was. It seems like neither Verizon or Samsung can tell me what the update truly is or when my phone will receive it.
I too have not received the update and Verizon representatives at levels 1 and 2 stated that Verizon has not issued an update as of 11:15PM on December 1st.
There were very very few who got the update. I've asked Verizon to let me know about these updates.
My Charge was just updated OTA 9:09am 12/2/11!!!!
Its about G'DAMN time 😛
Received update this morning and phone is now stuck in boot cycle. Has been like this for about 2 hours now. Not very happy!!!
Same think happened to mine. I wound up going to store and got a loaner... they are shipping me a new one.
GB Version 2.3.6
i510.06 V.EP4
I was just notified this morning of an over-the-air upgrade. Before the upgrade, firmware (which my understanding is the Android OS version) was 2.2.1. After the upgrade it is 2.3.6. 2.3.x is Gingerbread according to this link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Android_version_history
I hope this helps.
Still waiting in West Texas for the update.
On a side note I had a Revolution that was bricked with its GB update, tried the Hard reset to no avail, they had to send a new one.
I've only read of one bricked Charge so far.
i just got the update!!!! makes the phone work and look soo much better
Finally!!! Woke up at 9:30 and saw that when I unlocked my phone at 9:45 I got the System update message. I wish Samsung and Verizon would just let us download these updates. But I got stock Gingerbread via OTA, so I'm happy. I had to resist going the XDA route.
Got my update this morning. My phone also got stuck in the boot cycle- I called Verizon and they said to just do a battery pull, which I was scared to do on my own accord. Phone seems to be working fine after doing that, but I have not really tested anything with the new software. My version is also now 2.3.6.
Got the update overnight (December 2. Turned my Charge into a hockey puck. I continually rebooted through the splach screen for three hours. Called support, said yeah that has been happening a lot. Took it to store they could not restore... gave me a Thunderbolt until a replacement Charge is shipped... sometime next week. GAHHH!!!!!!
Update: Soon after posting, i received the update, and of course with my luck - boot loop.
Hard reset didn't work.
So another has been sent overnight.
This stinks, waited so long for a Gingerbrick.
I got this update Yesterday Afternoon , it took about 30 minutes maybe ? i honestly wasnt paying much attention .. it says on my phone ..BASEBAND VERSION : i510.06 V.EP4 , SCH-i510.EP4. ETC ETC ... and I hate to say it, but the batter has drained faster than before and I have changed nothing ... more updates as I see them ..
After my Droid Charge did the system update today I have not been able to use my phone. I get frozen on the unlock screen and the phone keeps turning on and off again and again. My battery completely drained and is having problems recharging as well. Made for a very frustrating day as I rely on my phone to get calls when I am on call at the hospital. Not sure what can be done to fix this so will have another frustrating call day tomorrow 🙁
Received update this morning and phone was stuck in boot cycle for 45 minutes until I restarted. Once I restarted the phone came back quickly and so far I'm loving the update... My droid Charge was a piece of garbage on 2.2 but now the phone is fast and seems to not have the same memory leaks that caused me to have to boot the phone daily. Not sure if the OS will get sluggish again but for now I love the update... Took too long for Verizon to come out with it but so far I am quite pleased with 2.3
The update fixed a rediculous problem withthe GPS calculated altitude in programs for fitness and Google MyTracks. Altitude was reading 1/10th the proper value before the update. I had written in several forums and reported directly to Samsung via Verizon several moths ago. Glad they got it fixed - it could be dangerous for backcountry trekers using topomaps and their phone as an altimiter!
