Toshiba Thrive Thrives with Android 3.2 Update

Toshiba is updating the Toshiba Thrive table to Android 3.2 Honeycomb.  The Toshiba Thrive was released in July and in August received its first update that fixed the issue with the tablet in which it went to sleep for no apparent reason and then would not wake up without a reboot. It was hard for the Toshiba Thrive to thrive when it was napping all the time.  The Honeycomb update however adds lots of enhancements.

Enhanced features in Honeycomb Release 3.2.1.31.5.0002 include:

  • Enables an improved compatibility mode enhancing the way applications originally designed for smaller screen devices appear and function on the larger tablet display.
  • Improves screen rotation acceleration.
  • Adds extended screen support API, giving developers more precise control over the user interface across a range of Android-powered devices.
  • Installation Note-  The YouTube and Android Market Widgets may disappear from the homescreen after installation of this update due to a change in the application naming convention.
You can update your system software by either of the following methods:
  • Tap on the update message sent by the Toshiba Service Station application to your device, or...
  • From the Home screen tap on the 'Apps' icon in the upper right corner, locate and tap the 'Service Station' app's icon, tap 'Check for Updates' and follow the on-screen directions.
Please connect to AC power and remove SD cards and devices connected through a USB port before initiating the update.  The complete install should take 2 to 15 minutes, depending on the type of update.   During which time you will be unable to use the tablet.
Though it will appear to power off and on as part of the install, Toshiba recommends that you power off your tablet, once the installation has completed, by holding down the power button for approximately 10 seconds.  Depending on your log in status at the time, you may be see a  prompt asking if you wish to power off your system, either select OK to shutdown, or continue to hold down the power button until the tablet vibrates and powers off.  Your tablet may then be powered on and used in the normal manner.

The Thrive features a NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor, Android 3.1, Honeycomb, a 10.1-inch high-resolution (1280 x 800) multi-touch LED backlit touchscreen, Swype, USB 2.0, HDMI, a 2MP front-facing webcam, a 5MP rear-facing camera, and an SD card slot.  The ports are full-sized, making connections easier.

The Thrive Tablet comes in 8GB ($429.99), 16GB ($479.99), and 32GB ($579.99) models.  Amazon.com is offering a special deals.
