LG announced that next year, during the second and third quarters, it will provide updates to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) to eleven of its popular smartphones released this year.
LG says that it will offer a smooth OS upgrade in a timely manner. Start dates will be announced later and will vary by market or carrier.
During the second quarter of 2012, upgrades will begin for the following smartphone models: the LG Optimus LTE, the Prada phone by LG 3.0, the LG Optimus 2X, the LG Optimus Sol, the LG my Touch Q and the LG Eclipse. These upgrades will be followed by upgrades for the following smartphone models during the third quarter of 2012: the LG Optimus 3D, the LG Optimus Black, the LG Optimus Big, the LG Optimus Q2 and the LG Optimus EX.
Many LG smartphones are re-branded with carrier names. After LG releases the update, the carrier then has to test it and optimize it for its network. It is not clear exactly which U.S. models will be updated.
The LG Revolution, LG Thrill 4G (based on LG Optimus 3D) and T-Mobile G2x (LG Optimus 2X) appear on the Wireless and Mobile News' Top Ten Best Hottest Coolest Smartphone lists.
Samsung has been attacked recently for not updating to the Samsung Galaxy S line of smartphones and is reconsidering offering an update to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.
