Android Top OS, iPhone & HTC Top Makers with Teens Extreme Texting & Young Data Media Smartphone Fans

Nielsen Makers OSNielsen has found some fascinating trends in phone use by age, make and OS. Smartphone ownership has more than doubled in two years.  Teens and young people are heavy text, data and media users.

Android is the top operating system followed by iPhone, BlackBerry, Windows Phone and webOS. Android leads in all age groups.

Apple is the top smartphone maker(28.6%) followed by HTC and Motorola.  In contrast to Nielsen's findings the top rated smartphones this year have been dominated by Samsung and its Samsung Galaxy SII and Samsung Galaxy Nexus.

Teens are extreme texters. Teens (13-17)text count is 3,417 per month per teen in Q3 2011, averaging seven messages per waking hour.  Teen females sent and get 3,952 messages per month versus 2,815 from males.  Aside from messaging, data heavy activities such as mobile internet, social networking, email, app downloads, and app usage are the most popular mobile activities for teens

In the third quarter of 2011, teens used an average of 320 MB of data per month on their phones, increasing 256 percent over last year and growing at a rate faster than any other age group.  Much of this activity is driven by teen males, who took in 382 MB per month while females used 266 MB.

Teens voice phone use has dropped from an average of 685 minutes to 572 minutes. When surveyed, the top three reasons teens said that they prefer messaging to calling was because it is faster (22 percent), easier (21 percent), and more fun (18 percent).

  1. Not quite sure how you calculated the average number of texts per waking hour, but...

If you assume a conservative number of waking hours per day (12) with 7 texts per hour, you get ~7500 texts in a quarter (7 texts * 12 hours * 30 days * 3 months). Not even close to 3400
