We're still catching up on CES awards and products, while our friends who attended CES are still recovering. The Asus Padfone was selected as a Best of Innovations honoree in the Wireless Handsets category.
It's kind of like a mini Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime, the Asus Transformer Prime turns a tablet into a notebook computer. The Asus Padfone turns a smartphone into tablet. In fact, they are related because the both run quad-core Tegra 3 processors.
The Padfone smartphone slides inside a 10" tablet which shows everything on the tablet screen. The prototypes seen at CES are reportedly different than the final product expected to be announced at Mobile World Congress. The prototypes were reportedly running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. The Padfone featured a 4.3" touchscreen, front facing camera and back facing 8MP camera with flash/auto focus. The tablet showed stereo speakers.
The Padfone smartphone will have a capacitive multi-touch display and come with the Padstation dock which functions as a tablet when paired with the Padfone. When these two are connected, the smartphone’s display is seamlessly switched to the bigger screen and adjusted for optimal viewing while its battery is charged simultaneously. The Padstation also gains instant access to the smartphone’s functions including 3G data connection.
