Samsung Infuse 4G Update to Android 2.3 Gingerbread Lives

The update for the Samsung Infuse 4G to Android 2.3.6 ready to roll, according an AT&T Forum  announcement without a mention of an update to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

The update requires Samsung Kies mini software for PC computers only.   The update will not be sent Over-the-Air (OTA) reported one source.

The update includes Gingerbread features along with an updated Touch Wiz UI. The list of features in the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update are impressive, with the addition of download manager, active app management, shortcuts, one-touch copy/paste, widgets, icons, app groups, updated calendar options, camera geotagging, improved email synching, and camera auto-focus improvements.  Read Gingerbread tips.

Other features of the update include:

  • New Fonts options added include Choco Cooky, Cool Jazz, Rosemary.
  • Keyboard Changes: Android Keyboard with Wider Spaced keys and Quick Keys at the top
  • New Widgets: The name of the content provider will be listed on the widget list along with the widget name. Previously only the widget name was provided.
  • New Widget: Traffic (Android) added to list of available widgets

The update will remove the promotional Angry Birds pre-load from the  Samsung Infuse 4G. If you’ve started playing the game, you would need to re-download from the Marketplace and start from the beginning of the game.

Be sure that you backup your data before the update and that you have a strong Wi-Fi connection, so that files are not corrupted.  The Samsung Infuse 4G should also be fully charged,  just in case.

Although the link to Samsung page is not live, yet, there have been reports that you can still get the update via Kies mini.

If you are wondering why the update took so l-o-n-g, read what updates do to networks, later tonight.
