The first Voyager Mobile announcement was very popular with our readers, a night before launch day which was supposed to be May 15. However, the website was attacked by a DDOS attack and could not open until today.
We contacted CEO John Mardini who clarified the buying process for the new cheap unlimited service. You can only buy phones or smartphones that are not subsidized and locked to Voyager Mobile. The cheapest phone is $119.00 for a Samsung Flip phone.
NYU, senior Mardini started the company, last year with funds from his family because he was fed-up with his cell phone bill that even with unlimited services was over $200.00 a month when added roaming/international call fees were included. The company has seven employees two-of-whom the parents of the 22-year-old entrepreneur.
How Does Voyager Mobile Work?
After you buy a Voyager Mobile phone online, it is delivered with information on how activate it online. You create an online account and supply payment information. You can stop service at any time, but if you stop in the middle of the month, you will not get a refund for the remaining time left.
The company offers U.S. coverage but is only available in 22 states. If you buy a plan in New Jersey and visit California, you will be able to make phone calls, texts and use data. The coverage map is shown above. If you are currently under contract, buying a new phone and paying an ETF Fee will probably not reduce your total cost until you are free from your contract.

Voyager Mobile offers unlimited wireless plans start at $19 per month without contracts or credit check. Voyager Mobile costs $39 for all-unlimited voice, text and WiMAX data. Tax is added at purchase.
Voyager Mobile is only available in Alabama, Delaware, Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Mississippi, New Hampshire, New Jersey,North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Virginia, Washington, and West Virginia.
Devices bought from Voyager Mobile can be returned for a full refund within 15 days of purchase. You must have the original receipt, packaging materials and all components. You will be charged a restocking fee equivalent to 25% of the device purchase price.
Well the plans certainly do seem very cheap, especially if the data involved can be run at 4G speeds. But I never realized how much phones can be subsidized. That Samsung flip phone seems no more sophisticated than the senior value cellphone that tracfone sells, except this flip phone is $100 more expensive. Now either Voyager is making money off their handset sales, or SVC Tracfone is subsidizing their svc phone very heavily (which, if you considered that it's for seniors, would make a little sense).
