Codename One is the first mobile software development kit that allows Java developers to create native mobile applications across multiple mobile operating systems using a single code base. The SDK was recently released and WiMo News is going to see how easy Codename One makes to make mobile apps.
Codename One enables developers to start off in Java and develop native applications for iOS, Android, Blackberry, Windows 7 Phone and other devices easily.
The Java-based platform is open-source and draws all components from scratch rather than uses native widgets,
Codename One’s founders Shai Almog and Chen Fishbein are internationally recognized for engineering SunMicrosystems’s famous Lightweight User Interface Toolkit, a mobile platform used by leading mobile carriers and industry leaders to this date.
The Codename One SDK (Software Developer Kit) contains IDE plugins, a visual design tool, simulators for phones/tablets, our documentation/API and implementations for multiple platforms. Included in the SDK are simulators and build environment for iOS (java for iPhone/java for iPad), Android, Blackberry (RIM) and others (Windows Phone 7 Coming SOON!).
The development kit and all the tools within it are Open Source and completely free for use both commercial and otherwise. Codename One is growing its user base by 50 percent each month. It has received interest from industry leaders and operators including Vodafone. Codename One is free for up to 100 application builds per month. Premium features are available starting at $9 per month..
