AT&T released first quarter earnings reports with smartphone growth. iPhones keep selling like iPhones but market share of smartphones has decreased slightly over last quarter showing a decline in size of the Apple's cut of AT&T's smartphone business.
Update 4/4/2012 Correction: Yesterday we were able to confirm from AT&T that a total of 6 million smartphones where sold the number of iPhones however was from a reliable source that was incorrect. The actual number of iPhones sold was 4.8 according to AT&T, which equal 80% of smartphones a drop from 84% in Q4 2012.
In the months ending in March AT&T sold 6 million smartphones with four 4.8 million iPhones which equals 66.66% 80% smartphone sales, a drop from 84% of smartphone sales in the fourth quarter of 2012.
We contacted AT&T that verified that there were 4.8 million activated iPhones in Q1 2013.
The fourth quarter of 2012 showed the highest iPhone concentration in smartphones with 78%, 72% and 77% in the previous quarters. In total, iPhones account 79% of smartphones is 2012.
AT&T added 1.2 million smartphone subscribers, mostly feature phone ugraders in the fourth quarter of 2012.
At the end of the quarter, 72 percent, or 48.3 million, of AT&T's postpaid phone subscribers had smartphones, up from 61 percent, or 41.2 million, a year earlier.
AT&T gained 296K new contracts but lost 69K devices with contracts. Total wireless revenues, which include equipment sales, were up 3.4 percent year over year to $16.7 billion. Wireless service revenues increased 3.4 percent in the first quarter, to $15.1 billion.

In the second half of 2012, RootMetrics ranked AT&T’s overall wireless network performance 1st or tied for 1st in more than 70 percent of the 47 markets RootMetrics surveyed where AT&T had deployed LTE. However, when we tested the network, Verizon fared better.
The number of subscribers on usage-based data plans (tiered data and Mobile Share plans) continues to increase. Almost 70 percent, or 33.5 million, of postpaid smartphone subscribers are on usage-based data plans. This compares to 61 percent, or 25.1 million, a year ago and 38 percent two years ago
The number of Mobile Share accounts reached 3.3 million in the first quarter with an average of about three devices per account. More than a quarter of Mobile Share accounts choosing 10 gigabytes or higher. More than 15 percent of new Mobile Share subscribers came from unlimited plans in the quarter. Since the inception of Mobile Share, more than 1 million connections have come from unlimited plans.
AT&T’s 4G network now covers more than 292 million POPs, including LTE and HSPA+.
I've seen other sources indicate that AT&T sold 4.8 million iPhones. This would represent an 80% share. In line with the typical share.
Today, the reports are showing that the decline in iPhone sales was actually good for AT&T profits.
I think you used Verizon's iPhone sales and not AT&T's 4.8 million number they provided.
There were several numbers calculated differently that were misreported. Unfortunately the original news release posted by AT&T did not have the exact number of iPhone sales listed. Today Reuters is reporting 4.3 million iPhones sold by AT&T.
