The AT&T version of the Samsung Galaxy S4 was reportedly getting an update to Android 4.3 Jelly Bean.
The 719MB update enables the GS 4 to work with the Galaxy Gear smartphone. You can check for the update for an update (from About in the Settings menu).
Update: 11/15/ 1:31PM: There have been reports that the update starts and then stops in the middle of the process.
I contacted PR reps from AT&T. As far as we know, there has been no official word from AT&T about the Samsung Galaxy S4 update. Usually they receive notification of updates in advance.
It is not clear if the update has been stopped because when we tried to update an GS 4 on AT&T one message we received was "software update interrupted" and then the message was "current software is up to date."
There are forum members as well as commenters (see below) who state: "So after waiting for 3.5 hours to use my phone... the software update promptly got to about 60-65% and suddenly has disappeared from my phone. Going onto my software update area says "Phone up to date! Check again in 20 hours and blah blah minutes") despite still being on 4.2.2."
It seems like some who try the update, get stopped in the middle.
The update is a two step process, involving a download of the update to your phone, followed by the installation of the update to your phone. During the installation step, your phone will be unable to make or receive calls.
Prior to download/installation, you will be reminded with a message stating "Your device will be out of service while installing the download”.
Your battery should be charged to approximately 50% before starting the update and should not be removed during the update. Updates are available OTA (over the air) only and are 'pushed' to devices in stages over a 3 week time period . Device selection is random.
I would have to say yes. I downloaded the update which took about an hour. After it had finished my gs4 rebooted in recovery mode and the at&t logo came up and it said updating. It got about half way done and then it said update failed. Update interrupted. I went back to check for updates and it told me I needed to wait 24 hrs to try again. Under that it says continue update but it won't let me push it. I've tried kies and it won't work. I've manually set time and date one day ahead and update was interrupted each time. Now I have to wait 70 hrs. Just great. At&t is going to call me on Sunday to see if the update will come through. We shall see.
I have tried the OTA update twice. My phone downloads approximately 100 MB and then just stops. The option to continue the update is not highlighted on my phone so I have no idea what is going on. Any suggestions?
In the past during an update for the Samsung Galaxy S III I experienced a similar issue. With large updates, connect to Wi-Fi first.
Same problem here. Download completes but the update fails at about 25%. Tried 5 or 6 times. Same thing. Kies says the phone firmware is incomparable. Now my S4 is saying its up to date but still 4.2.2. I'm guessing At&t pulled the update.
This happened to me as well, I'm very disappointed. I really wanted this update. Any answers on what to do now??
Same here. Rep at local store said to turn phone on and off. Same lame comment from many low knowledge tech reps. Still waiting. 3rd attempt will be tonight.
Reps in stores are not technicians. I'm sure you know every working aspect of your job. From tech stuff to random question people have.. The people in stores have to know how to work 20 different systems and 60 different phone features at any moment... So my advice is if you have a question call a place called TECH SUPPORT!
Same problem here also. Tried install 4 times, and would do a partial install, then told me to check back in 24 hrs. Installed KIES and got message stating that firmware updated could not be done on KIES. Rebooted phone a couple of times then connected wi-fi then adjusted date a couple days ahead but that didn't help after attempts.... This sucks.... The phone is in my opinion better than an iPhone, but the firmware update from AT&T is like trying to sign up on the Obamacare website....
I was just talking with Tech support W/AT&T and he said " AT&T previously released the Android 4.3 software update for the Samsung Galaxy S4 on November 14, 2013 - however, effective November 15, 2013, the software update for Samsung Galaxy S 4 is temporarily on hold while AT&T and Samsung look into potential improvements."
He went on to mention RE: a re-release: "We do not have information on that as of yet (when the "updated" update), but I would recommend keeping an eye out for another notification on your phone soon."

Same thing has happened to me, got the notification to update my s4, stopped updating, called at&t they forced the update over the phone watched my phone say 100% but still no 4.3, called at&t and samsung, samsung said to go to a best buy for the update, sat at best buy for 25 minutes watched the update download, but still no 4.3 and even tried kies and my s4 is not compatible with kies...wth
